pouch and straw
Capri-Sun packaging: Here’s 5 reasons we are proud of our pouch and straw
Capri-Sun’s unique innovative packaging and its refreshing taste both make us distinctive and popular with many consumers around the world. The two are actually very closely related: it’s our innovative pouch that allows us to keep that delicious drink tasting fresh and natural without the use of preservatives or artificial colours and flavours.
But there’s many more reasons to love our fruit drink pouches and straw than this. Here are five of them.

1. Top of the pops
Enjoying Capri-Sun is fun! It is a refreshing beverage made for carefree moments.
Who hasn’t relished the sheer pleasure of slurping up the last few drops of juice, before blowing into the orange straw to inflate the pouch and then popping it joyously with both hands?
Go on, admit it!

2. Our pouch is the reason why we’ve been preservative-free since 1969
Back in 1969 we designed a unique way to package our juice drink.
The durable, protective Capri-Sun pouch uses very thin layers of foil and plastic to allow our fruit juice drinks to enjoy a long life without the need for all those preservatives, artificial flavours and artificial colours.
Here’s just how little packaging material we use in each pouch – and how each protects the drink.

The outer PET weighs less than 0.6g.
This durable and protective plastic, offers a high resistance to scratches and tears, while protecting the natural contents from the harmful effects of light and other outside influences.
The middle layer is made of a tiny sliver of aluminium.
It’s a mere eight micrometres thick: you’d need to stack up 125 of these foil layers to achieve a thickness of just one millimetre.
Finally, there’s a 2.39g PE layer lining the inside of the pouch.
This PE layer protects the natural flavours that create the Capri-Sun taste. PE and PET are the most commonly used materials for packaging.

3. Our pouch makes us super-lightweight for transporting
Whether you are tossing a single pouch into your kid’s backpack as a way to rehydrate and energize throughout the day, or you’re loading pallet after pallet of Capri-Sun onto a lorry to distribute all over the world, there are many things to love about our lightweight packaging.

Let’s first of all place our pouch and straw on the scales to weigh up their advantages over other ways to package drinks.
Our pouches and straw weigh less than 4g each.
That little, orange straw weighs just 0.4g – a typical sports cap weighs at least ten times more than this.
- A 200ml Capri-Sun pouch weighs less than a fifth of a 200ml PET bottle.
Our pouches and straw weigh less than 4g each.
- In the past 25 years we have made our already lightweight pouches even lighter, reducing their overall weight by 23%.
- When each lorry pulls out of our distribution centre it contains 94% preservative-free fruit drink and only 6% packaging.
- Our straw is much lighter – and uses significantly less plastic – than the screw caps or the sports cap mouthpieces that other drinks use.

Capri-Sun Fact: We’ve reduced the weight of our packaging up to 23 % in the last 25 years. A 200ml Capri-Sun pouch weighs less than a fifth of a 200ml PET bottle. Our pouches and straw weigh less than 4g each.
4. Our pouches leave a very light carbon footprint
The Societe Generale de Surveillance (SGS) assessed our unique packaging against other more widely-used alternatives in 2013, such as glass, PET, aluminium can or carbon composite. They found that we produced the lowest carbon footprint of all in the manufacture and distribution of our drinks.
The SGS was not alone in finding our packaging to be ‘ecologically advantageous’.
Considering the entire lifecycle of packaging, from the extraction of raw materials, through to manufacture and on to its disposal, the German Secretary of the Environment and the independent Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (IFEU) both found ecological benefits in our approach.

5. We continue improving our pouch
We’re proud of our pouch and straw – but we understand that they are not perfect. This is why we continue improving.
We’ve reduced the amount of material we use to produce each pouch and are now actively looking for ways to make them fully recyclable as soon as possible. Although our packaging is already recyclable through a process that separates the material, not all recycling plants have the technology to do so.
And we will start to replace our straw with an eco-friendly one made from paper.
Our team of technicians and scientists is working hard to find a way to produce a fully recyclable, durable and lightweight pouch that can maintain the freshness of our natural ingredients without the need for artificial preservatives, flavours or colours.
We’ve already come a long way – and we’re committed to going further.
